American commentator John McEnroe is facing backlash from tennis fans after an ill-prepared interview with world No.1 Jannik Sinner during the Australian Open. Sinner had just survived a tough match against Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate, coming back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 and advance to the third round.

During the post-match interview, McEnroe asked Sinner if he had played against Schoolkate during their junior years, given they are both 23. However, it’s well-known that Sinner bypassed most junior tournaments, turning pro at 17. Sinner responded, “No, because I haven’t played so many juniors,” prompting laughter from the crowd, while McEnroe added, “Whoops.”

McEnroe followed with another awkward question, referring to Schoolkate as an “unknown,” a remark that tennis fans and experts criticized as another sign of McEnroe’s lack of preparation.
