American commentator John McEnroe is facing backlash from tennis fans after an ill-prepared interview with world No.1 Jannik Sinner during the Australian Open. Sinner had just survived a tough match against Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate, coming back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 and advance to the third round.

During the post-match interview, McEnroe asked Sinner if he had played against Schoolkate during their junior years, given they are both 23. However, it’s well-known that Sinner bypassed most junior tournaments, turning pro at 17. Sinner responded, “No, because I haven’t played so many juniors,” prompting laughter from the crowd, while McEnroe added, “Whoops.”

McEnroe followed with another awkward question, referring to Schoolkate as an “unknown,” a remark that tennis fans and experts criticized as another sign of McEnroe’s lack of preparation. Fans, including prominent reporter Jose Morgado, called out McEnroe for being uninformed, with many suggesting his lack of research is becoming a recurring issue.

Despite the awkward exchange, Sinner handled the situation with grace, praising Schoolkate’s performance and the electrifying atmosphere. The Italian superstar is now set to face American Marcos Giron in the third round, continuing his Australian Open title defense.
