Emma Raducanu Praises Emma Navarro Ahead of Miami Showdown
Emma Raducanu spoke highly of Emma Navarro’s impressive form ahead of their upcoming clash at the Miami Open, acknowledging that the American enters the match in better shape. The British star also took a moment to commend Navarro’s personality, describing her as one of the most likable players on tour.
Raducanu Cruises Past Ishii in Miami Return
Playing her first Miami match since 2023, Raducanu made quick work of wildcard Sayaka Ishii, securing a 6-2, 6-1 victory in just an hour to advance to the second round. She will now face No. 8 seed Navarro, who received a first-round bye.
While Raducanu’s win over Ishii marked just her second victory since the Australian Open, Navarro arrives in strong form, having recently won the WTA 500 title in Mérida. When they meet in Miami, it will be their first-ever head-to-head battle.
“It’s going to be an extremely challenging match. She’s probably in better form, so I can go out and express myself and try and compete for every point. She is a great person—on tour, one of the people you’d warm to and say ‘hi,’” Raducanu said of her upcoming opponent.
Confidence Boost for Raducanu After Strong Start
The 22-year-old Brit was dominant in her opening match, converting five of six break points and dropping just one game on serve. Apart from an early break in the first set, the 2021 US Open champion remained in full control, allowing Ishii only one break-point opportunity throughout the match.
“I’m very pleased to have gotten through that. It’s not an easy first round, playing someone a bit younger, dangerous, and in good form. So I’m really proud of how I competed today. It hasn’t been easy for me coming into this, but I think I put out a really good performance,” Raducanu said.
If she defeats Navarro, it will mark her third career win over a top-10 opponent—a significant step forward as she looks to regain momentum in 2024.
