Iga Swiatek surpasses Serena Williams with new accomplishment following opening round win at Miami Open
Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek has added yet another record to her name following her dominant victory over Caroline Garcia at the 2025 Miami Open.
Facing Garcia for the second time in a row at a WTA 1000 event, Swiatek replicated her success from Indian Wells last week, securing an impressive 6-2, 7-5 win over the Frenchwoman.
Swiatek’s Streak in WTA 1000 Opening Rounds
With this latest triumph, the reigning French Open champion has now won 25 consecutive opening matches at WTA 1000 events—a feat unmatched since the format’s introduction in 2009. She surpasses 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and two-time Major winner Victoria Azarenka, both of whom recorded 23 straight opening-round victories at this level. Rounding out the top three is five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova with 19.
Despite her strong performances, Swiatek is still chasing her first title of 2025, having fallen in the semifinals at the Australian Open, Doha, and Indian Wells. The 23-year-old looked in top form in the desert but was halted by eventual champion Mirra Andreeva in a gripping three-set battle.
