Iga Swiatek Confronted by Heckler Before Miami Open Match

Iga Swiatek faced an unsettling incident before her third-round match at the Miami Open, as a man described as an obsessed critic and hater disrupted her practice session with personal and offensive remarks.

Before securing a 7-6(2), 6-1 victory over Elise Mertens, the five-time Grand Slam champion was on the practice court with her coach, Wim Fissette, when a man in the stands began hurling insults at her. The individual, a Polish native residing in Florida, has a history of targeting Swiatek online through social media.

Heckler’s Disturbing Comments

The heckler reportedly mocked Swiatek by asking about her relationship with her mother. The 24-year-old’s parents divorced years ago, and rumors in Poland suggest that she and her sister have been estranged from their mother.

Ahead of the confrontation, the man posted his intentions on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Tomorrow I’m going to Miami. I’ll ask Igushka about her relationship with her mother. Do you have any questions for Daria? I’ll ask them at training.”

The individual also took aim at Swiatek’s sports psychologist, Daria Abramowicz, in another now-deleted post:

“Iga complains to Daria that the hooligans are shouting from the stands and asking questions about her mother. Igushka is clearly upset. Almost like the scouts when you mention Igushka’s lack of relationship with Mrs. Dorota!”

Fans Outraged by the Incident

Tennis fans were quick to condemn the heckler, calling him a “sad person” and speculating that he must be deeply unhappy with his own life to resort to such harassment.

Reports indicate that the man intended to attend Swiatek’s match against Mertens, but security intervened after being alerted by the 23-year-old’s team. Despite this, a bodyguard was seen seated in Swiatek’s box during the match, ensuring her safety.

The incident has sparked discussions about player security and online harassment, with many calling for stricter measures to protect athletes from such unwanted and harmful behavior.
