Iga Swiatek’s Playful Exchange with Umpire After Miami Open Warning

Iga Swiatek had a lighthearted moment with umpire Marija Cicak after receiving a time violation warning during her Miami Open victory over Elina Svitolina. The World No. 2 secured a hard-fought 7-6(5), 6-3 win but couldn’t resist teasing Cicak after the call.

While serving for the match, Swiatek deliberately slowed down to compose herself, prompting Cicak to issue the warning. Unfazed, Swiatek clinched the victory and later joked with the umpire, saying, “I almost thought I’m not getting a time violation from you.”

This isn’t the first time the pair have clashed over time violations. At the 2023 Western and Southern Open, Swiatek was penalized for delaying play while receiving a serve, sparking a brief but heated exchange.

Despite these incidents, Swiatek downplayed any tension, acknowledging Cicak as a strict but fair official. “I respect Marija Cicak; she’s a great umpire. She’s just very precise with the rules,” Swiatek explained.

Swiatek has also faced recent controversy at Indian Wells, where she apologized after an outburst led to a ball narrowly missing a ball kid. She later admitted she let her emotions get the better of her but never intended any harm.

The Polish star now advances to the next round in Miami, maintaining her strong form on the WTA Tour.
