Coco Gauff’s Latest Health Update Sparks Bigger WTA Conversation

The Miami Open 2025 isn’t just about high-stakes tennis; it’s also a stage for player wellness. With the WTA’s #AheadOfTheGame initiative making waves, Coco Gauff has shared her latest experience with the program, underscoring its importance for athletes and beyond.

The Growing Focus on Women’s Health in Tennis

The WTA’s health initiative aims to provide comprehensive medical screenings that monitor bone health, women’s health, heart function, skin health, breast health, and injury risks. The program’s presence at the Miami Open has shed light on the critical role of routine health checks for professional athletes.

UNICEF’s recent findings highlight the urgency of such initiatives. Their report warns that global efforts to improve adolescent girls’ and women’s nutrition are off track, with no region set to meet the 2030 targets for anemia reduction and low birthweight prevention. Additionally, acute malnutrition rates are rising in crisis-hit areas.

Gauff’s Experience with the WTA’s Health Screenings

During the Miami Open, Hard Rock Stadium transformed into a medical hub, housing specialists in various fields to conduct mandatory screenings. These examinations ensure that players maintain peak physical condition despite grueling travel schedules.

The WTA’s official Instagram page recently posted a video featuring Coco Gauff, Asia Muhammad, Caroline Garcia, and Yue Yuan, highlighting the importance of these checkups. The post emphasized how regular screenings help detect potential health concerns early, encouraging everyone—not just professional athletes—to take charge of their health.

In the video, Gauff enthusiastically shared her thoughts:

“Hey guys, it’s Coco here! I just want to talk about my amazing experience with the WTA and Hologic at our annual physicals. And it’s not your ordinary physical. I got to check my bone health with DXA. I did a dermatology exam, a breast exam, and even spoke with an Ob-Gyn. I’m super thankful to be on a tour that prioritizes women’s health. You should celebrate that too. Thank you, bye!”

Health vs. Performance: Finding the Balance

Despite Gauff’s enthusiasm for health initiatives, her on-court performance at the Miami Open has been inconsistent. After an impressive start, including a dominant win over Sofia Kenin, Gauff suffered a disappointing Round of 16 loss to 34th seed Magda Linette (4-6, 4-6). Her match was marred by 12 double faults and 45 unforced errors, raising concerns about her recent form.

Reflecting on her performance, Gauff admitted:

“It wasn’t great today. It hasn’t been great the last few weeks—I’m trying to figure it out. Definitely not happy about it… just one of those days when I felt awful in everything on the court.”

With the clay-court season approaching, Gauff has a crucial opportunity to reset. She is set to compete in Stuttgart in mid-April, where she hopes to break through on a surface that has historically challenged her.

Hologic’s Commitment to Women’s Health

As the title sponsor of the WTA, Hologic goes beyond branding. The company actively contributes to the WTA Foundation, donating for every ace served. This year, they launched “Serving Up Greater Equity Against Breast Cancer”, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and funding for breast cancer prevention and treatment in underserved communities.

Last year, these medical screenings proved life-saving for doubles star Gabriela Dabrowski, leading to an early breast cancer diagnosis. Remarkably, she continued her season and even won an Olympic gold medal in Paris, proving that prioritizing health doesn’t mean sacrificing success.

What’s Next for Coco Gauff?

Gauff now shifts her focus to the clay season, eager to improve her results and solidify her place among the elite. Will she finally crack the code on clay and claim her first singles title on the surface? Stay tuned as the season unfolds.
