Charleston Open: Jessica Pegula Stages Epic Comeback to Reach Semifinals

World No. 4 Jessica Pegula pulled off a stunning comeback at the Charleston Open on Friday, rallying from a set and a break down to defeat fellow American Danielle Collins and secure her spot in the semifinals. The final score: 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

In the early stages of this all-American quarterfinal clash, Collins appeared unstoppable. The 2022 Australian Open finalist stormed through the first set and quickly built a 2-0 lead in the second. At 15-30 in the third game on Pegula’s serve, Collins was just two points away from going up a set and a double break.

But Pegula held firm, taking the third game and turning the tide of the match. She broke Collins in the fourth and eighth games, then confidently served out the second set to level the match.

From there, Pegula completely dominated. Collins’ game collapsed in the third set, and the fourth seed won six straight games to close out the match with a bagel, 6-0.

Pegula’s Streak Against Collins Continues
With this victory, Pegula improved her head-to-head record against Collins to a commanding 6-0. While Collins looked poised to finally get her first win over Pegula, she couldn’t maintain her level once the momentum shifted.

Pegula now awaits the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 3 seed Zheng Qinwen and No. 9 Ekaterina Alexandrova. Should Pegula face Zheng, fans can expect a blockbuster semifinal showdown worthy of a WTA 500 event.

This marks the third consecutive year Pegula has reached the Charleston semifinals. At 31, she’s still chasing her first final appearance at the tournament — a feat she’ll look to achieve this Saturday.
