Novak Djokovic is optimistic about Jannik Sinner’s return to tennis at the upcoming Italian Open, where he predicts a strong performance from the 23-year-old.

Sinner, who has been sidelined since January’s Australian Open due to a three-month suspension for two positive doping tests involving the banned substance clostebol, will make his return on home soil in Rome. The ban ends on May 4, marking his first competition back at the Italian Open.

Given the event’s significance as the final Masters 1000 tournament before the French Open, and with Sinner playing in front of his passionate home crowd, expectations are high. Djokovic, recognizing the form Sinner had shown before his suspension, has no doubt about his potential.

“I will take in Rome, Sinner,” said Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, when speaking to Sky Sports. “He has the quality, and playing at home will give him a huge boost.”

Sinner isn’t the only player with high hopes for the Italian Open. Last year’s champion, Alexander Zverev, will also be looking to defend his title. Carlos Alcaraz, aiming to win his first Masters 1000 title of the season, has backed Zverev as the one to watch in Rome.

“I’m going with Sascha Zverev,” said Alcaraz, the four-time Grand Slam champion. “He’s playing well, so I’ll pick him.”

Meanwhile, Casper Ruud, taking a different approach, predicted a potential breakthrough for a new face in the Masters 1000 circuit. “I think Arthur Fils has a good chance to win a Masters 1000 on clay this year,” said Ruud, calling it a “wild guess” that seems to have merit given Fils’ potential.
