Cameron Menzies revealed he keeps a hand warmer in his bag to stay comfortable during matches.
The Scot delivered an impressive performance at the European Darts Grand Prix, beating Raymond van Barneveld 6-3 with a brilliant 104.50 average and four 180s in Friday’s first round.
Despite the strong display, Menzies admitted he sometimes has to manage physical discomfort, especially in colder conditions, which can affect his grip and overall feel during play. To deal with this, he relies on a simple solution — keeping his hand warm.
Speaking to Darts News, he explained that warmer temperatures make things much easier for him, allowing him to play more freely and maintain consistency.
Fortunately, conditions in Germany suited him well, helping him perform at his best.
Menzies has had an inconsistent start to the season and is still chasing his first ProTour quarter-final of the year. Currently ranked world No.28, he is aiming to build momentum in Sindelfingen, where he faces Ross Smith for a place in the third round.
He acknowledged the ups and downs of the sport, noting that consistency is one of the biggest challenges in darts.
Menzies also spoke highly of Smith, highlighting their long friendship.
“I’ve known Ross for about 20 years,” he said. “I’d love to win and make it to Sunday — that’s where everyone wants to be in these events.”
Reflecting on his journey, he added: “From playing in pub leagues to performing in front of thousands of fans, it’s something I’ve always dreamed of.”
Despite his respect for van Barneveld, Menzies admitted he has enjoyed strong performances whenever they’ve faced each other.
“I do feel a bit sorry for him,” he said. “I always seem to play well in those matches, so I’m probably not on his Christmas card list this year.”
