Specsavers insure record-breaking darts star’s EYES for £1million hours after winning latest title

SPECSAVERS have insured the eyesight of record-breaking darts sensation Beau Greaves for a staggering £1million.

The unique deal was announced just hours after Greaves claimed her third Women’s World Matchplay title with a dramatic victory in Blackpool on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old edged 2022 champion Fallon Sherrock 6-5 in a thrilling final to secure a record-breaking third crown and pocket the £15,000 winner’s prize.

Greaves now joins a growing list of famous names who have taken out insurance policies on the body parts most crucial to their careers.

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo famously insured his legs for an estimated £114million, while pop superstar Miley Cyrus reportedly covered her tongue for £1million because of its role in her trademark performances.

Following her latest triumph, Greaves stressed just how vital her eyesight is to her success on the oche.

She said: “I’m really proud to have won the Women’s World Matchplay for a third time. It was a tough final and matches like that come down to the finest of margins.

“In darts, having clear, reliable vision is a huge part of performing at your best. Partnering with Specsavers feels like a natural fit because my eyesight is such a big part of my game, so it makes sense to protect it.”

The announcement comes alongside new research showing that 78 per cent of people recognise the importance of good eyesight in sport.

Despite that awareness, almost half of those surveyed (49 per cent) admitted they would rather replace a broken mobile phone than book a health appointment such as an eye test.

Specsavers brand partnerships and sponsorships lead Neil Liddle explained the thinking behind the eye-catching campaign.

He said: “When you’re aiming for targets just millimetres wide, your eyesight isn’t just important – it’s everything. Yet while people recognise the importance of good vision, many are still putting other priorities ahead of looking after their eyes.

“By insuring Beau’s eyes, we want to remind everyone – not just elite athletes – to value and protect their vision by making regular eye tests a priority.”

Greaves has continued to rewrite the history books despite seeing her remarkable 114-match winning streak come to an end in March.

She quickly bounced back by becoming the first woman ever to win a Players Championship title, defeating former world champion Michael Smith in the final.

The Doncaster star was later forced to skip the qualifiers for both the Slovak Darts Open and the European Darts Open in May because she was moving house.

She is now set to make her long-awaited debut on the PDC European Tour at the Hungarian Darts Trophy, which gets underway on Friday, August 28.
