“I’m so annoyed” – Michael van Gerwen hits out after frustrating return to Netherlands for Premier League Darts
Michael van Gerwen and Rotterdam Ahoy still haven’t found harmony since the Premier League Darts introduced its new format in 2022. For the fourth consecutive year, the Dutchman crashed out immediately in front of his home crowd—once again showing visible frustration as the night slipped away from him.
Ahead of the evening, “Mighty Mike” openly admitted that competing on home soil brings a different kind of pressure. The weight of expectation, the noise, and the desire to deliver all seem to combine—and recent results only reinforce that narrative. Unfortunately for Van Gerwen, that pattern repeated itself yet again. His campaign ended almost as soon as it began, suffering a heavy 6–2 defeat in his opening match against Jonny Clayton.
Clayton, known for punishing even the slightest mistake, showed no mercy. Van Gerwen spoke candidly after the match, clearly disappointed with how things unfolded. At 1–1, he missed two crucial darts that could have put him in front. Instead of taking control, he watched the match slip through his fingers, losing four legs in a row and falling into a position he couldn’t recover from. “I’m absolutely gutted,” he admitted in his post-match interview. “If you create a chance like that, you have to take it. You have to be honest with yourself—against a player like Clayton in this kind of form, you simply can’t afford to let those opportunities go. That’s what annoys me the most.”
Clayton came into Rotterdam full of confidence, sitting at the top of the table and playing some of the best darts of his campaign. Averaging around 125, he quickly took control of the match, racing into a dominant 5–1 lead. Although Van Gerwen managed to pull one leg back, the result was never really in doubt. ‘The Ferret’ wrapped things up in spectacular fashion, producing a brilliant 170 checkout that brought the crowd to life and underlined his dominance. Van Gerwen had expected a tough battle. “You know you’re facing someone in great form, someone with rhythm and confidence,” he said. “You try to break that flow, but it’s incredibly difficult when everything is going their way.”
Despite the one-sided scoreline, Van Gerwen didn’t believe he played poorly—and that may have been the most frustrating part of all. “That’s what makes it so annoying,” he explained. “I actually feel really good. My game is there, my confidence is there—but I’m just not showing it when it matters. It’s an okay performance, but I know I’m capable of so much more. Sometimes it just hurts my eyes to watch it back.”
Even with another early exit in Rotterdam, Van Gerwen’s Premier League campaign is far from over. He still sits in fourth place, holding onto a crucial playoff position with five league nights remaining. There’s still everything to fight for, but the margin for error is shrinking. His attention now turns to Night 12 in Liverpool, where he will face Josh Rock in his opening match. It presents a fresh opportunity—not just to collect points, but to finally shake off the inconsistency that has been holding him back and remind everyone why he remains one of the most feared players in the sport.
