Van Gerwen told he’s ‘beyond embarrassment’ as ex-darts star gives him advice

Michael van Gerwen has been jokingly told he’s acting “like a 20-year-old going completely wild” after celebrating PSV’s title win in style.

The world No.4 opted to skip this week’s Players Championship double-header in Wigan to join the festivities, with videos showing him in high spirits — singing, dancing, and enjoying the night in a bucket hat.

Close friend and former pro Vincent van der Voort couldn’t resist poking fun at the three-time world champion.

Speaking on the Darts Draait Door Podcast, he said: “I had to be careful what I said or his fans would come after me! But I did message him after seeing those videos.

“I told him two things — first, never sing again, and second, never wear that hat again!

“But in all seriousness, he had a brilliant night. You can’t say he doesn’t enjoy himself. He’ll turn up to a party anytime, anywhere. Even though he’s been through a tough period, he’s clearly enjoying life right now.”

Van der Voort believes Van Gerwen is simply making up for lost time after dedicating so much of his early life to darts.

“From the age of 15 or 16, he was completely focused on the sport,” he added. “No going out, always thinking about the next tournament and the pressure that came with it.

“Now he finally has the chance to let off steam — something he never really had before. You just hope it doesn’t last too long. At the moment, he’s a bit like a young lad going wild.

“Eventually, you’d expect him to refocus, because darts is still his priority. But for now, he’s enjoying himself, and that’s fair enough.”

Van Gerwen returns to action on home soil in Rotterdam, where he takes on Jonny Clayton on Night 11 of the Premier League Darts.

The Dutchman has found wins hard to come by at the venue in recent years, last tasting victory there in 2022. He currently sits fourth in the table, holding a four-point advantage over fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen.
