Emma Raducanu Faces Tough Test Against Marketa Vondrousova in Abu Dhabi
Emma Raducanu has been handed a challenging opening-round clash at the Abu Dhabi Open, where she will face 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
Originally set to compete in qualifying, Raducanu received a last-minute upgrade into the main draw, only to be drawn against one of the most formidable opponents in the tournament.
Vondrousova Back from Injury, Ready to Compete
Vondrousova has struggled with injury setbacks in recent months, having shut down her 2024 season early due to a hand injury. She made a comeback in Adelaide last month but was forced to retire in tears during her second-round match after another painful setback.
The world No. 37 also missed the Australian Open, but she now appears to be fully fit and eager to make an impact in Abu Dhabi.
“It’s tough but it’s nice to know who you’re playing against first. I expect a tough match. She’s a great player. I hope it’s going to be a good one,” Vondrousova told The National.
After weeks of recovery, the former world No. 6 is determined to prove herself on the singles court. She has already made a strong return in doubles, partnering with fellow Czech Laura Samsonova to secure a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Magda Linette and Sofia Kenin.
A Tricky Matchup for Raducanu
Raducanu and Vondrousova have met twice before, with each player securing one victory. Their first encounter came at Wimbledon 2021, when an 18-year-old wildcard Raducanu, ranked outside the top 300, pulled off a stunning win to reach the tournament’s second week.
However, Vondrousova got her revenge a few months later on the clay courts of Prague during a Billie Jean King Cup tie, where she dominated Raducanu 6-1, 6-1.
With Vondrousova now pain-free and determined to make a statement, Raducanu faces a formidable challenge in her first match on Tuesday. The British No. 2 will need to bring her best form to stand a chance against a resurgent opponent.
