Emma Raducanu Faces Tough Challenge in Doha Opener Against Anna Kalinskaya

Emma Raducanu’s bid to snap her three-match losing streak at the Qatar Open won’t come easy, as she has drawn No. 14 seed Anna Kalinskaya in the first round.

The 22-year-old Brit suffered an early exit in Abu Dhabi this week after losing to Marketa Vondrousova in the first round. However, her Middle East swing continues, with the Doha tournament organizers granting her a main draw wildcard.

This marks Raducanu’s second appearance in Doha, though she will be hoping for a better outcome than last year, when she fell in the opening round. Her path to a deep run looks challenging, as she could potentially face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round.

Raducanu and Kalinskaya Set for First-Ever Meeting

When Raducanu and 26-year-old Kalinskaya square off in Doha, it will be their first career meeting.

Raducanu enters the match on a three-match losing streak, having fallen to Iga Swiatek in the Australian Open third round, followed by defeats to Cristina Bucsa in Singapore and Vondrousova in Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, Kalinskaya has had her own setbacks in early 2025, dealing with injury and illness, which forced her to miss the Australian Open. The Russian showed promise by reaching the Singapore semifinal last week, but she was forced to retire against Ann Li due to physical struggles.

A Key Opportunity for Raducanu

Raducanu’s confidence may not be at its peak, but if Kalinskaya isn’t fully fit, the Briton’s chances of scoring a much-needed victory increase significantly. This opening-round battle could be a crucial test for both players as they look to regain momentum on the WTA Tour.
