The US Open’s decision to introduce a new format for its mixed doubles tournament this summer has prompted Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas to announce his participation in the event.

The World No. 11, known primarily for his singles prowess, seldom ventures into the realm of doubles. Although he has occasionally partnered with his younger brother, Petros Tsitsipas, in men’s doubles, the US Open’s plan to implement new rules that will facilitate the participation of top-ranked singles players has swayed Tsitsipas to compete at Flushing Meadows this year.

Tsitsipas will team up with a very familiar face.

The two-time Grand Slam runner-up made this announcement following his victory over Lorenzo Sonego at the ongoing Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The former World No. 3 revealed that he will be competing alongside his girlfriend, WTA star Paula Badosa.

“We are planning to play,” said Tsitsipas. “She’s the mixed doubles partner I would always play with. I don’t have any other options out there or any other female player that I would want to play mixed doubles with. She’s always under my consideration and always someone I would want to share the court with.”

The pair had previously played together at the US Open last year. With the revamped mixed doubles rules now in place, more singles stars have announced their intentions to compete at the event. Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur has confirmed that he will be playing alongside his fiancé, British WTA star Katie Boulter.
