Ben Shelton’s Awkward On-Court Interview Snub at Eisenhower Cup Sparks Debate

Ben Shelton made headlines at the Eisenhower Cup after flatly rejecting an on-court interviewer, leaving fans puzzled about what had just happened. Some speculate it may have been due to noises the interviewer made just before attempting to speak with the 22-year-old American.

Shelton Shuts Down Interviewer Before Match

On Tuesday night in Indian Wells, the Eisenhower Cup, a Tie-Break Tens event, returned for its 2025 edition. Shelton and Emma Navarro, the defending champions, kicked off their campaign against Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur.

However, before the match even started, an on-court interviewer approached Shelton at the net for a few words. Instead of engaging, Shelton firmly declined the request, saying:

“Someone else gotta grab the mic, I’m not talking to you.”

The interviewer, trying to brush off the moment, turned to Navarro, who offered a few words instead.

The interaction has left fans speculating, with some wondering if Shelton’s response was linked to past grievances with media conduct.

Shelton’s History of Criticizing the Media

Shelton’s Eisenhower Cup moment comes just weeks after he blasted the media during the Australian Open. In a press conference, the 2023 US Open semifinalist expressed discomfort with certain on-court interview questions and called out what he perceived as mockery and disrespect.

“I don’t think that the guy who mocked Novak, I don’t think that was just a single event. I’ve noticed it with different people, not just myself,” Shelton said.

He also referenced a Learner Tien interview, where the American teenager defeated Daniil Medvedev but was subjected to what Shelton deemed an embarrassing line of questioning.

“There are some comments that have been made to me in post-match interviews by a couple of different guys,” Shelton continued.

“Whether it was, ‘Hey, Monfils is old enough to be your dad. Maybe he is your dad.’ Or today on the court, ‘Hey Ben, how does it feel that no matter who you play in your next match, no one is going to be cheering for you?’”

Shelton & Navarro Fall Short in Eisenhower Cup Defense

Despite the awkward pre-match moment, Shelton and Navarro defeated Boulter and De Minaur 10-7 to advance to the Eisenhower Cup semifinals. However, their title defense ended there, as they fell to Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina.

While the on-court snub has sparked conversation, it remains to be seen whether Shelton will address the situation or if it was simply a personal preference to avoid a particular interviewer.
