“No they aren’t for sale” – Peter Wright’s wife confirms major trophies were not approved to be sold
Peter Wright’s glittering darts career has delivered some of the sport’s biggest prizes, including two World Championship titles and World Matchplay glory. But recent reports suggesting those treasured trophies were being given away left fans stunned.
A video circulating online appeared to show some of Wright’s most prized possessions, including his 2020 World Championship trophy and the trophy he lifted after winning the 2021 World Matchplay. The footage suggested the memorabilia could be offered as prizes through a competition website.
At first glance, it looked as though the former world No.1 had decided to part ways with some of the greatest symbols of his success. However, that was not the case.
Wright has previously spoken about moving on from past achievements and focusing on the future as he attempts to revive his career. Once one of the most feared players on the circuit, “Snakebite” captured eight major ranking titles, two World Championships and two World Cup of Darts crowns with Scotland during a remarkable spell at the top of the game.
The video sparked speculation that Wright had chosen to sell off his trophies, with the World Matchplay trophy displayed alongside a signed frame featuring photographs from his title-winning run.
But Wright’s wife and manager, Jo Wright, quickly moved to shut down the rumours.
Responding to the clip on X, she wrote: “No they aren’t for sale. They wasn’t approved to be sold. They belong to our children.”
The clarification ended concerns that the trophies had been intentionally put up for grabs, with the family intending for the memorabilia to be passed down to their children instead.
Wright’s most recent major triumph came at the European Championship in 2023, proving he still possessed the quality to compete with the sport’s elite despite a decline in form.
The Scotsman will be absent from the World Matchplay for the first time since 2012 this summer, underlining the challenges he currently faces. Nevertheless, Wright remains determined to rediscover the form that made him one of darts’ most successful players and add even more silverware to an already remarkable collection.
